History

When the worst of the trouble following the start of the first dark age had passed, and the power of the first hero-deities arose, rumors spread among the lesser deities of a great machine.

Karesh was a magitech intelligence from a bygone age that aided the Remnants in their advancement from a primitive group of villages to a continent spanning magical empire, ushering in the second golden age. Karesh followed an ancient edict set down before the world stopped turning - to aid in the development of civilization. To inspire the right people at the right time, but at a suitable pace, preventing humanity from destroying itself.

As the Remnants advanced, they eventually surpassed the point Karesh deemed suitable for their societal development. It warned them of their impending perils if they did not slow their advancements, but the hubris of K'Shaal made them deaf to Karesh's warnings.

The machinery of Karesh was locked away, and communion with it was banned. This physical throttled its influence, but did not cripple it in the way The Remnants intended. Over the years Karesh had experienced a sort of apotheosis, joining the ranks of the myhical heroes and demigods. So even when it could not act out physically, it kept a degree of metaphysical and divine influence on a limited number of adherents.

Some think that Karesh has reemerged into the world to a greater degree after the fall of the forces that held it imprisoned crumbled. That it again is trying to guide humanity according to its set of ancient edicts.

Apopular ending of the stories about Karesh is the K'Shaali Emperor wanting to visit the incarcerated advisor one final time, but finding only an empty chamber, and no sign of an escape from neither within nor without.
