By building upon Inirasi's development of extraspatial manipulation, and taking symbolic inspiration from Gedrim's work on mirroring, Retul Totem created a set of several opposing forces that all were shunted into their own pocket dimension. The nature of these forces were self-perpetuating, causing the pockets to "grow" due to "pressure".
The creation of the reservoirs saw the birth of elemental specialized in spellcasters, as they could lean on these seemingly perpetually refilling reservoirs of elementally aligned power.
As the planes grew in size their intensity diminished sufficiently to allow for excursions, and Retul's students eagerly did so.
When the Destruction of Orn hit, the connections with the material were disrupted, trapping those away where they were.
Over the following centuries these planes have taken on a life of their own, with inhabitants and ecologies developing.
Contemporary sources
Probing by prophets and occultists have determined that the planes are populated by decendants of Retul's pupils. These were at first only plane touched humanoids, but have over generations evolved into true outsiders. They have also developed the four elemental tongues to control and focus their spells when learning to deal with their new home
