- Born and raised in Oxfold.
- Spent much of his youth on the campus of the academy where his father held a chair.
- when his sister Claire exhibited a talent for magic, his father favored her over him, which first disappointed him, but that later spurred him towards a more independent life. All this has given him a subconscious wish to reacquire the attention he had gotten from his father as a young boy.
- enlisted in the Mendarian navy at the age of 18, escorting trade ships and guarding them against both pirates and monsters.
