There is a moderate fey presence where it borders the Verdant Veil. Few venture into the forests there, as anyone who delve too deep are rarely seen again. The few settlements that border the Veil are all in a precarious truce with their elven neighbors, and as they are not even contiguous with the rest of Wahlminster, they may in many cases be seen as independent city states.
The leadwards parts of Wahlminster, is the more traditionally bounded region. It was the historical home of the human survivors conquered by the emigrats and subsequent religious crusade from the Mistwreath.
Currently the region exports a limited amount of lumber, mined metals, and food. It also has some tourism and some production of goods of various types. Its biggest claim to fame, however, is the fishery industry. The hunting of aquatic megafauna migrating along the sunwards coast of Orn yields annual bounties of a large selection of resources. Meat, oil and bones being but a few.
The large inland lake holds ruins of the age before the Destruction of Orn, but they are all but completely submerged
History
Culture
See The Ashen Empire for further info on the pre-modern Wahlminster culture.
The people of Wahlminster are said to be humourless and distant people. This is mostly accurate, and the only real way you get to know an inhabitant of Wahlminster, is to be one yourself. If you however are an inhabitant, or are recognized as one, the locals gladly share both drink and stories.
As the name suggests the Wahlminster phenotype is common in the region. Characterized by copper and red hair and pale skin.
Subcultures
- Rothbury has a population of nomadic traditional wahlminsterian people thought to be the closest thing that remain from before the fall of the empire.
Magic
For centuries, there has been rumors of rare individuals in and around Wahlminster who practice hidden arts. These have always been unsubstantiated, and deemed to be only xenophobia of a culture who has always been a bit separate from that of the rest of Mendaris, if not Orn entirely.
Academics and historians often say it is something from the inhabitants that lived there before the conquest from Mistwreath. An ember of magical talent that survived the fall of Old Orn. See Wahlminster heritage
