- Canonized as a saint, and is referred to as St.Vergil by Mistfaith adherents.
History
Vergil was the archetypal explorer. He lived in the age when much had been forgotten about the world, and doubly so for anything beyond the Mistwreath.
He charted large parts throughout his travels, sharing his maps and routes freely, but never discovered any way to cross the mountains encompassing the region.
On what was to be his final expedition, he climbed a particularly treacherous mountain route - all while taking notes and charting preferable paths. Ever the explorer he could not resist the draw of the summit, and near the peak the miracle that was the cause of his canonization occurred. Through a miraculous break in the mist, he was shown a mountain pass not previously visible, a pass not ordinarily accessible. He immediately drew a detailed drawing along with the best measurements of position and distances he could, and started his descent.
Sadly, Vergil died before he was able to return to Bazragad. He fell on one of the dangerous paths he had charted earlier, breaking his leg and suffering serious internal bleeding. In his journal he wrote his farewell to his loved ones, before carefully stowing his maps, notes and journal safely away as his last act.
He was found a little under a year later, dead, but intact and unusually well preserved, still clutching his satchel. When his notes were examined an expedition was planned to the location he had seen. This expedition did clearly find the break in the mountains, and the exodus from the Mistwreath could start.
Vergil was canonized by then church pontif Hyrmund Pyre for the apparent miracle that gave him his visions, but "behind the scenes" he started another ascent that may yet elevate him to the status of one of the Inward Facing Gods of the Mistfaith pantheon.
After a centuries in a mausoleum at Bazragad, his body now lies in the chapel atop Vergil's Ascent.
