Rare to the point that most think them the fancy of fantasists. Historians are aware of accounts of offspring from elves and humans, but few can say they have ever met one.
Origin
Their origin is not a mysterious one, but the circumstances in which an offspring between an elf and a human can be conceived varies. One source could be a captive elf that by some means find themselves romantically involved with a human, or a human woman may be acosted and have pregnancy forced upon her due to an elf raid.
Description
Physical description
A half-elf looks much like a human, with a couple of features which can give them away. They can have slightly pointier ears, be slightly shorter than the average human, or share some other characteristic of an elf mixed with their majority human phenotype.
They are invariably infertile, meaning they can not father or mother children through natural means. Much like the offspring of a horse and a donkey.
Society
Half-elves are by necessity fully integrated into human society, with very few deviations. Intentionally concieving a half-elf is prohibited because of the trouble it brings, and due to the fact that elves are not allowed in human society to begin with - just like humans are not allowed in the elven forrest.
Though not different from any other human in nature, half-elves suffer from a long list of stigmas if identified, from jealousy for their longer lives, to fear of them turning into trolls during The Stranger, kidnapping children human, or some other ficticious fear.
Relations
The Lords and Ladies
Any half-elf found by a fey is in danger of being outed to the Lords and Ladies. They do not allow any offspring between elves and any other race live, and will take steps to kill any half-elf if ever given the chance - or worse.
Humans
Good enough, given they can hide their nature. If a half-elf is outed as such, he or she is usually shunned due to the attention they seem to attract. Individuals may vary in their reaction, and may sympathize with their plight, and aid in their concealment.
Gnomes
If the gnome is one integrated into human society their reaction is much the same. If however the gnome is one that has an allegence with a fey, they may use the opportunity to curry favor with the Lords and Ladies, putting the half-elf in a great deal of danger.
Elves
Little is known of the elven society, and how they perceive any halfbreed is likewise unknown. It is however fair to assume it is not positive.
Dwarves
Dwarves don't like the fey. To them a half-elf is little more than a watered down elf, which the dwarves don't like either.
Racial Traits
As the default pathfinder half-elf.
