Introduction

An old adventurer has passed from this world, and as is tradition, his life is to be celebrated by his family and friends.

Through either ordinary or inexplicable means, you find yourself at this gathering of extraordinary people who have come from all across the Orn pay their respects to a once dear friend.

You are probably someone's plus one for the gathering. You otherwise probably met Nathan Miller at least once in your life, and you share some connection.

Details

The story of Nathan Miller can be read on his page, but in short he was the nucleus around which several talented and ambitious people gathered.

Throughout his career this roster of heroes, as he often called them in jest, were called upon to perform daring and dangerous deeds. Mercenaries is one word, but it does not encompass the breadth of problem solving his groups performed. While at times violent, he insisted on not taking lives unless justified, and diplomacy would be used if the option presented itself.

This endeavor kept up for years, but diminished as Nathan's age started to hinder him. He had a mansion, a respectable fortune, a beautiful wife and two beloved children. He could not find it in himself to risk not seeing them grow up, and enjoy his life for a bit.

The campaign picks up with a letter. One with a black edge, signifying news of a death. It is an invitation to a funeral for Nathan Miller, one written by Nathan himself:

Dear friend.

As you may have surmised, this letter comes to you to inform you of my death. I have been poorly for some time now, and do not think I have long left. The alchemists and clerics have all tried their remedies and prayers, but it seems my time has come.

I therefore invite you, and any significant others you deem fit to accompany you, to attend my funeral. I hope this occasion can bring us all together one more time to catch up and share some stories, eat fine foods and drink some of the wines I've been saving. In hindsight I should have invited you all sooner, as I would love to have attended myself, but such is life.

The time and place should be on the enclosed invitation.

Until we meet again.

Nathan Miller

P.S. I have set aside an adequate sum to cover any travel expenses, so speak with my assistant Alan, and he'll get you sorted.

Summary

The actors are introduced, given a chance to stretch their legs, so to speak. Though not perfectly integrated, all of them are accepted into the dinner that celebrates the life of Nathan Miller. Many of his friends and acquaintances share memories they have of their time with Nathan. After a time the body is cremated, and the wake ends.

All of the players involved stay behind for some reason, and are intercepted by John Baxter, who are in desperate need of some help.

With little encouragement, the unlikely bunch of loosely connected adventurers set out to save the canal from a small group of bandits.
